The Hair Cycle
To understand the life cycle of a hair follicle, we have to understand the three different phases of the natural growth cycle.
Anagen phase
The cycle starts with the “Anagen” or “Growing” phase, at this phase a new baby hair emerges from the follicle and pushes the old hair out. The follicle is pushing nutrients to the new hair and this enables the hair to grow healthy and strong.
The “Anagen” phase can last between 3-5 years, as we get older this phase gets shorter and the hair maybe become thinner after each cycle.
Catagen phase
After the Anagen phase the hair enters the transitional stage which is called “Catagen” phase which lasts almost 10 days. During this phase, the hair detaches from the follicle and the next phase begins.
Telogen phase
After Catagen phase, the hair has been detached from the follicle, it enters the “Telogen” phase or “Resting” phase. This phase lasts around 3 months and the existing hair while not being attached to the follicle and not receiving nutrients, falls out. A new baby hair emerges pushing the dead old hair and the cycle starts again.
85% of your hairs are in the Anagen phase, 15% of your hair are in the Telogen phase, that is why losing 50-100 hairs per day is totally normal. If you notice shedding more than 100 hairs per day, it could be due to a number of factors such as:
- Genetic factors
- Stress
- Post pregnancy
- Age
- Hormonal changes
- Medication
